Homeowners' preference for flooring has shifted over the past few decades. Hardwood has become a favourite of many, especially those who have an open-concept main living space. Some even choose other materials that look like hardwood, but cost less, are more durable, or need less upkeep. However, carpeting is still an option, especially in bedrooms. Depending on décor and atmosphere, some choose to consider area rugs and runners. What would your choice be?
In an open-concept living space, it works best to have one flooring to cover the entire area. This makes a space look bigger while allowing the eye to move smoothly around the room. Even though big may be better, there are times when you want to feel cozy as well. An area rug laid to define specific spaces like a conversation area, a dining area, or an office space can achieve that feeling without actually cutting up the room.
Some homeowners prefer hardwood or tile all over their residence, many prefer to have a softer surface in the bedroom, especially those who live in colder climates. It can be quite jarring to get out of bed and set your warm tootsies on a freezing floor. However, you can have the best of both worlds by opting for an area rug or carpet runners. Either can be placed so that some covering surrounds the bed.
Other areas give the option for using runners instead of carpet: hallways, entryways, stairs and narrow rooms. Those who prefer hard flooring opt to use runners in these areas for a variety of reasons. As mentioned above, creating warmth is one of those reasons, warmth as in take away the cold and warmth in how the room feels. Other reasons runners or area rugs are contemplated are safety and noise reduction.
Safety is a primary consideration for all families, especially those with children and pets. Those who have mobility issues are keenly aware of what is underfoot. If the stairs are wooden, they can be very slippery. In fact, one designer claimed that the most common reason her clients inquired about runners for stairs was because of their pets. Smaller dogs had trouble finding purchase when trying to climb wooden staircases. Some had accidents and fell, while others just stopped trying and looked sad when their human would go to another floor that they couldn't follow. Children and even some adults have had accidents falling down slippery stairs. A runner provides traction and a sightline that can be missing when stairs are all one colour. Similarly, anyone with mobility issues finds stair runners offer that extra bit of grip needed to aid the trip up or down the stairs. In contrast, when a runner is used, it must be adhered to padding to make sure it does not slip or slide.
Using the correct padding under an area rug or a runner is essential for a variety of reasons. On stairs, the pad needs to be thin enough to ensure the carpet pad lays flat. It should be no more than 3/8" thick. It will absorb the sound, provide cushion to the step and prolong the life of the carpet runner. A good underpad will also protect the rug or runner and protect the floor from scratches and scrapes. The underlay will keep the carpet laying in the spot you choose and not slide and bunch up wherever it ends up. Maintaining its location also prevents slips, slides and skids.
