Buying and installing carpeting is a significant investment in your home. As with most purchases of that nature, you want to make sure you know what kind of Warranty you get with your product. Warranties for carpets are not merely straightforward, one size fits all. Therefore, the consumer must understand the various warranties that come with carpeting: what’s covered and what’s not.
Wear Warranty also know as Quality Assurance Warranty
This is the run of the mill, most basic Warranty available. It simply means that the carpet will not fall apart. It does not cover anything that has to do with the performance of the carpet. If the fibres start unravelling as you bring the role home, then you are covered. Anything else – not so much. The wear warranty is supposed to protect the buyer if the carpet wears out. However, it is generally so basic and specific that it is valid only if a certain percentage of the carpet wears. If the insurer does agree to cover the wear, in most cases, just the worn parts are repaired. Nice
Texture or Appearance Retention Warranty
This is one of the best warranties to have. This is the one that covers the loss of the original appearance or texture. All carpets have fibres twisted to create the texture. Over time, these fibres can start to unwind and fray from wear and tear. This will cause the carpet to lose its look and feel, especially in higher traffic areas. When reviewing your Warranty, make sure your carpet has a Texture Retention warranty as not all carpets come with one. Whether or not one is available is a good sign of the quality of the carpet. If the carpet has a longer-term Appearance Retention Warranty, that is a good sign that the carpet will stand up to the traffic in your home. The manufacturer would not back up their product so well if there was a concern they would have to replace it frequently. In contrast, if there is no Appearance Retention Warranty, you can expect the carpet will not stand up well. You will have to replace it sooner than later.
Stain and Soil Warranty
Surprisingly, in the world of carpets and flooring, there a difference between soils and stains. Although both result in the carpet looking far from pristine, you need to know what is covered in your Warranty and to what extent. Some manufacturers cover stains ad soils separately and at different levels. Under most Stain and Soil Warranties, there are numerous exclusions. Many substances not covered include mustard, herbal tea, bleach and the all-time favourite, urine. Some carpets have “no exclusion” Warranties. If possible, that is the best choice.
Fade Resistant Warranty
Carpets fade over time. It’s a natural progression as carpets are exposed to the elememts and any pollutants in the home. It is not surprising that carpets have Fade Resistant Warranties. As with all aspects of Warranties, read the fine print. It still makes sense to protect your carpet by limiting direct sunlight and monitor high traffic areas.
Watch for Warranty Exceptions and Exclusions
Most notable exclusion under your Warranty, are stairs. In most cases, you will find that your Warranty will identify that carpets installed on stairs are not covered. Stairs are standard in many households, yet the carpet manufacturers identify that foot traffic on stairs is defined as abnormal wear and tear. Apparently, walking down the stairs has the added impact of gravity, so the force on the carpet is even more than on regular high traffic areas. However, more manufacturers are coming around and adding stairs to the Warranty. If you are purchasing carpet to be installed on stairs, make sure your Warranty covers your selection.
Other areas of exclusion may include carpets installed in the kitchen or bathroom. These areas have an increased possibility of flooding, besides the moisture that is more common in these rooms.
