Carpet installation is a task that not everyone would want to do on their own as it can prove to be tiresome and if you make a small mistake it will end up being clearly visible to every onlooker. However the whole process is not rocket science and with the help of a few specialized tools you can install your carpet yourself. Given below are the steps you need to follow to successfully put your carpet in place.
Get rid of the existing carpet
If there are any moldings around our floor then start by removing them. If you feel necessary then you might have to remove the door from the entrance so that you can easily move out the old carpet and get the new one in. Before removing the old carpet make sure you vacuum it properly so that you don’t breathe in a lot of dust then cut the carpet into strips which will be convenient to move. Don’t remove the tag strips as you can easily use them. In case it is a new construction then you will have to install new strips.
Lay the under pad
Get strips of the under pad and butt them against each other. Make sure you do not overlap them. Staple the underlay along the inner edge of your tackless strip. If you see any extra underlay along the inner surface of the tackless strip then trim it and use a duct tape for sealing the seams. If you have a concrete floor then you can use dome adhesive to fix the under pad in place.
Fixing the carpet in place
For a proper carpet installation you must start with a piece of carpet which overlaps the floor edge by around six inches. You can then trim the overlay so that the carpet fits perfectly. For making your first piece measure the length of the room and add six inches to the measurement then mark this measurement on the back of the carpet. Fold the carpet and use a sharp utility knife to cut through the carpet.
Taking care of the seams
If your room size is such that you have to use multiple pieces of carpet then you need to follow the same process of measuring marking and trimming with all the pieces. Ensure that the carpet pile runs in the same direction in both the pieces. While laying down your carpet you must figure out a layout in which the seams are not present in noticeable areas. When you are joining two carpet pieces use an adhesive to fix them together.
Giving the final finishes
Use a knee kicker for attaching the carpet to the wall edge. A carpet stretcher is to be used for finishing the process of attaching the carpet. Stretch your carpet over the tackless strip and with a wall trimmer or a utility knife trim the edges near the wall. Use a stair tool to tug down the carpet in the gap present between the strip and the wall. At the edge of the door trim the carpet in order to centrally align the edge under the door and then fix a door edge strip.
