Carpets get old over time just like any other house hold decoration and need to be replaced periodically. There are professionals who can install new carpets from wall to wall for you however installing a wall to wall carpet is such an easy task that most of us can do it ourselves. It is just about whether or not you can afford the time required for installation from your busy schedule. All you need are the specialized tools used for carpet installation and a proper plan. The tools are fairly easy to procure on rent from your local tool shop and given below is a proper order of steps you need to follow for an error free and wrinkle free wall to wall carpet installation.
Step 1: Climatizing the carpet is very important if you do not want it to expand or contract due to changes in the weather conditions. For this all you need to do is buy the carpet one day before installation and let it rest and adjust to the environment of the room for 24 hours. Never install carpet right after buying it from the store to avoid wrinkles and shrink.
Step 2: Removing the old carpet is the foremost thing and using the tools you need to pull out the moldings and using the knife, cute the carpet into 18-24 inches strips. Starting from one end, pull the carpet strip off and keep rolling it till you reach the other end which is all you need to do. Do not forget to get rid of the underlay as well because it is never re-usable.
Step 3: clean your floor of any dirt and debris to ensure a smooth surface for the new carpet. Also, if you have wooden floors, now is a time to repair and boards that produce a squeak. New tackles strips should be installed after this leaving a gap of about half an inch along the perimeter of the room from the walls.
Step 4: laying down the underlay at his point requires utmost care so that no underlay strips are overlapping each other. Trimming the underlay strips for excess material on the inside of the tackles strips and sealing the seam with a duct tape is the finishing touch for this step.
Step 5: Measure your room and add 4-6 inches to the measurements so that the carpet when laid down run up along the walls. This excess can be later on cut to get a nice wall to wall edge. If you have to lay down strips of carpets to cover your entire floor then make sure your measurements do not overlap the individual strips.
Step 6: Use the knee kicker to fix the carpet along the edges. Use the toothed end of the tool to fix it on the carpet floor and drive the knee towards such that the carpet is stretched out over the tackles strips. The tacks will grab the carpet and hold it in place. Repeat this step along the whole periphery of your room.
Step 7: Finishing it up with closing any vents on the edges by applying moldings and centering the carpet on the doorway along with installing the doorway strip is the last thing you need to do. Now stretch that back and relax because you just installed your brand new carpet.
