The festive season is gone and everyone is returning back to their normal lives. It is that time of the year when you take stock of your furnishings and carpets and prepare for the spring. It is time to clean those stains from the festive season. Most of your carpet will have stains from coffee, coals, beverages, milk and other delicacies. The following tips will help you remove those unwanted stains and make your carpet look better than before.
Removing Water Soluble Stains
Colas, berries, alcohol, ice cream, milk, and jelly are water soluble stains and can be removed more easily. You can remove them by using a cleaning solution consisting of non bleach detergent and water. The detergent can be replaced with white vinegar.
Chocolate, blood, mustard, tea, and wine require special treatment to be removed. Mix one tablespoon of ammonia in a cup of water. This mixture is however not recommended for wool-based carpet. If the stains are harder, use a mixture of chlorine in water. But this solution can damage carpets which are not solution dyed. If you aren’t sure which solution to use, check what the manufacturer has to say.
Removing Coffee
Coffee can be difficult to remove. Use the following method to remove all the coffee stains accumulated during the season. Take some water and add one tablespoon of dishwashing detergent. The detergent can be replaced with white vinegar. Take a white cloth and sponge the stain. Apply the solution repetitively and blot it with a dry cloth to completely remove the stain.
Fat and Oil
Fat and oil are difficult to remove using the above-mentioned methods because they don't dissolve in water. You can use the ironing method for them. Place a paper towel on the carpet and iron it at warm level. This will force the oil to come out of the carpet and stick to the towel. This cleaning technique can also be used for removing wax-based stains.
Wax can also be removed using additional methods. Freeze the wax using ice. Once it has frozen hard, shatter it with a spoon or some other blunt object. Make sure to vacuum the area before the wax becomes soft. Blot up the carpet using a white towel.
Other Stains
Nail polish can be removed using your nail polish remover. Cigarette burns could be removed by rubbing the carpet with a hard surface like a dull knife. If some glue has been spilled onto the carpet, you can use alcohol to clean the area. Take some soft white cloth and moisten it with alcohol and press the area. Moisten the glue thoroughly. Repeatedly wipe the area with the cloth until the carpet is fully clean.
These methods can help you remove the different types of stains your carpet collected through the festive season. Make sure to use the right method based on the carpet fabric and the kind of stain. Some stains will require more time as they will need repeated wiping.
